While World War I is spreading throughout Europe, Barcelona becomes a Neutral City for the refugees, politicians, businessmen, artists, peasants and people from all over Europe who are swept by the armed conflict. At this time of major social unrest, a large number of people with different goals are trying to flee the city. Some are running away from something and others see their future away from Europe. The harbor is filled with people trying to get on board a ship heading to Livorno, the first step on a trip to the Americas, where they eagerly expect to start over.

Enquanto a Primeira Guerra Mundial estala pela Europa, Barcelona torna-se uma cidade neutra, à qual refugiados, políticos, empresários, artistas, plebeus e pessoas de toda a Europa são arrastadas pelo conflito armado. Neste tempo de grande instabilidade social, um número de pessoas com objetivos diferentes tenta sair da cidade; algumas porque fogem de algo e outras porque visualizam o seu futuro longe da Europa. O porto fica repleto de pessoas que querem embarcar num navio com destino a Livorno, a primeira escala na viagem para as Américas, onde esperam ansiosamente o início de uma vida nova.
